The most important tree for the economic development in the Great Lakes Region, and one of the most spiritually significant trees for my soul - the Eastern White Pine!
Eastern White Pines are quite recognizable and common throughout the state. They have long blue/green needles that grow in clumps of 5 and 3-8” long cylindrical cones. If it’s an open location, they will shoot up quickly and retain branches along the entire trunk, taking up as much sun real-estate as they can. If they grow in shaded areas, the tree will strategically place as many needles as possible where they’ll receive the most sunlight and sheds the needles that don’t produce energy. This strategy gives them their classic ‘umbrella’ shape and helps explain why some trees have a different shape than others.
